Cultural Origins

Close to Huaraz are the ruins of Chavin. The religious "Cult of Chavin", which involved a lot of hallucinogenic cactus chewing, was reponsible for all Peru's subsequent civilisations religious practices and beliefs. The ruins date back to 400BC. There are clear links between the Chavin civilisation and those of Central America.

To get there the bus traversed the Cordillera, with some great peaks and lakes to admire.
